Initially, retainers are worn all the time following braces to ensure straightened teeth remain in the correct position. At Elegant Orthodontics, Susan Baloul, DMD, MS, DScD, a dual-trained specialist in orthodontics and periodontics, offers permanent retainers to keep newly straightened teeth in place following braces. Dr. Baloul is happy to offer her services to people living in Boston, Brookline, Norwood, Framingham, MA and the surrounding areas.

What is a Permanent Retainer?

Permanent retainers are typically made of metal and attached to the back of your teeth with permanent cement. Placed behind the front lower teeth, a permanent retainer can remain in place for over five years if necessary. This device is recommended for anyone whose teeth are at risk for returning to their original positions or anyone who may have difficulty keeping up with or remembering to wear the retainer.

Why Choose a Permanent Retainer?

Dr. Baloul recommends permanent retainers for many patients to allow bone to tighten around the teeth to prevent shifting. Because they are easily misplaced, she always suggests them for children and teens especially during the first year or so following braces. Additionally, bonded retainers are less noticeable than removable retainers.

How Do I Care for My Permanent Retainer?

With permanent retainers, also called lingual retainers, it is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Cleaning them is very important to prevent decay, cavities and gum disease. We recommend brushing after every meal and flossing every day. Water flossers are very effective at removing food particles trapped in the teeth by the retainer. It is also very important to continue avoiding the same foods you avoided with braces.

How Long Will I Have to Wear a Permanent Retainer?

The length of time you wear a bonded retainer is a decision Dr. Baloul makes as she evaluates your teeth and bone structure. She is the only one who can remove it. When you are ready to have it taken out, it is most likely replaced with a removable retainer. It is important to wear a retainer as long as needed to ensure your teeth stay in place.

How Much Do Permanent Retainers Cost?

Dr. Baloul includes a permanent retainer in the cost of your orthodontic treatment. We go over the cost of orthodontic treatment during your consultation. We accept cash, checks and major credit cards in addition to offering financing through OrthoFi. We realize the expense involved with orthodontics and want to make it more affordable whenever possible. If you have dental insurance, we can also help determine whether you have coverage for braces.
