Traditional metal braces are the most popular type of braces to straighten crooked teeth and other misalignment issues. At Elegant Orthodontics, Susan Baloul, DMD, MS, DScD, is a dual-trained specialist in orthodontics and periodontics. Dr. Baloul uses metal braces to straighten teeth and create a beautiful, confident smile for people living in Boston, Brookline, Norwood, Framingham, MA and nearby communities.

What Are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are the most recommended type of braces used to treat orthodontic issues. From mild to more severe problems, metal braces are effective at straightening teeth, correcting misaligned bites and adjusting jaws.

Why Choose Metal Braces?

Metal braces have been at the forefront of orthodontics as the type of braces to successfully and effectively correct most orthodontic problems. While they are more obvious than other types of braces, they have improved over the years to be less conspicuous than in earlier decades. They are also more affordable than other types of braces which is typically an important consideration for patients.

How Do Metal Braces Work?

Metal braces use brackets and wires to straighten teeth. The brackets are affixed to the teeth and a thin, durable wire is threaded through the brackets and fastened to special brackets in the back of the mouth. Elastic bands are placed over the brackets to keep them in place. Once applied, the wires provide constant pressure to the teeth to gently push them into their correct position.

About every four to six weeks, Dr. Baloul checks the braces and teeth to monitor the treatment progress. She typically tightens the wires a little to continue the pressure on them. Immediately following the appointments, it is common for teeth to feel a little loose and uncomfortable. The discomfort may be relieved with pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen and the loose feeling usually goes away within a day.

How Long Do I Have to Wear Metal Braces?

The timeline of wearing braces varies with each patient. It is common to wear them for one to four years depending on your age and the reason for needing them. We discuss the length of the process during your consultation with Dr. Baloul.

How Do I Care for My Metal Braces?

It is imperative to maintain good oral hygiene during your treatment to prevent food from increasing plaque build-up and causing decay. We recommend you see your general dentist for professional cleanings and continue brushing after every meal and flossing every day. An electric toothbrush is ideal when available – typically morning and night – along with a water flosser to ensure small particles of food are removed.

How Much Do Metal Braces Cost?

The cost of metal braces varies with each patient, and it is usually the least expensive type of orthodontic treatment. It is based on the extent of the problem being corrected and how long the treatment lasts. We go over the costs with each patient as well as our payment and financing options. We offer financing through OrthoFi to make the treatment more affordable. We also help determine if your dental insurance plan provides coverage for orthodontics. When scheduling your initial consultation, we ask that you provide us with your dental insurance information to let us check your plan.
